Dr Jordaan mourns late Nkanunu

SAFA President, Dr Danny Jordaan has joined millions of South Africans in mourning the passing away of former SA Rugby President, Silas Nkanunu.

The late Nkanunu made history when he was elected first black rugby president in the late 1990s.

‘’We have lost one of the most fervent advocates of transformation in sport and one person who wanted South Africa to project a true Rainbow Nation in every sport,’’ said Dr Jordaan.

‘’Mr Nkanunu’s contribution in rugby is well documented and in him, the country has lost one individual who devoted his time to the growth of rugby especially among the disadvantaged communities.

Dr Jordaan recalled that Nkanunu was both a rugby and cricket administrator.

‘’He was the President of the United Cricket Club based in Port Elizabeth’s New Brighton. He was also President of Kwazakhele Rugby Union where Cheeky Watson and Mike Ryan became the first players to leave white rugby and turned their backs on possible Springboks caps to join non-racial rugby under the leadership of Nkanunu.

‘’He was also a prominent lawyer in the anti-apartheid struggle and was a pioneer of rugby unity,” added Dr Jordaan.

The SAFA President said the country had lost a nationalist and a committed leader in the anti-apartheid struggle.

‘’To his family, friends and rugby family, we join you in mourning this giant. May his soul rest in peace,’’ said the SAFA President.
