GladAfrica Championship weekend wrap

GladAfrica Championship leaders Cape Umoya United and Jomo Cosmos were beaten for the first time in the 2020/21 season.

Goals from Temptation Chiwunga, Bafana Kali and Sipho Zwane helped JDR Stars thrash Umoya 3-1 in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the defeat, Umoya remained at the top of the league standings – a point above second-placed University of Pretoria.

Cosmos slipped down to the seventh spot on the log after succumbing to a 1-0 defeat to Uthongathi FC at home with Tshepo Chaine scoring the only goal of the match.

Meanwhile, Royal AM secured their maiden win of the season when they thrashed Free State Stars 3-1 at the Chatsworth Stadium.

The victory saw Royal, who are now under the guidance of former Mamelodi Sundowns academy coach Floyd Mogale, climb out of the relegation zone.

At the Kabokweni Stadium, TS Sporting extended their unbeaten run to three matches when they drew 1-1 with Pretoria Callies.

The action continued on Sunday afternoon with Khanyiso Mayo grabbing a brace which inspired Richard Bay to a 4-1 win over a winless Cape Town Spurs side in the Mother City.

While Sekhukhune United climbed up to the third spot on the standings after they came back from behind to defeat Steenberg United 3-1 at home.

Sekhukhune’s Limpopo-rivals, Polokwane City also recorded a win as they edged out University of Pretoria 1-0 at the Tuks Stadium.

Lastly, Cape Town All Stars maintained their unbeaten record this season when they defeated Bizana Pondo Chiefs 2-0 at home with Wassem Isaacs and Ndiviwe Mdabuka scoring.
