Golden Arrows beat SuperSport United

Golden Arrows continued their good away form in the 2020-21 DStv Premiership season with a 1-0 win over SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Wednesday.

Victory, a first in Gauteng since September 2017, moved Abafana Bes’thende back up to second spot on the league standings. SuperSport remain in sixth place and have now gone seven matches without a win in the Premiership.

Matsatsanta threatened early through Sipho Mbule whose dipping effort forced Sifiso Mlungwana into an unorthodox save in the ninth minute of the match, but the Arrows goalkeeper was able to get enough power behind to ball to palm it away from danger.

Arrows scored with their first noteworthy chance with 22 minutes on the clock. A quick counter-attack gave Arrows a three-v-two situation and Knox Mutizwa waited until just the right moment to pick out the onrushing Nduduzo Sibiya, who finished with aplomb

Mlungwana was called into action once more in the 34th minute as Moses Ndhondhi took aim from long range and the Arrows shot-stopper had to be at his best moments later to keep out Teboho Mokoena.

The midfielder, who donned the captain’s armband on the night in place of the injured Ronwen Williams, hit the ball with some venom but Mlungwana was up to the task.

SuperSport continued to knock on the Arrows door after the break and only a timely intervention from Nkosinathi Sibisi denied Jamie Webber a goal in the 51st minute.

Mlungwana was at it again soon after, this time to deny Iqraam Rayners from point-blank range. Rayners looked set to score his first league goal for SuperSport but the Arrows gloves-man pulled off a superb save.

Mutizwa had a chance to put the game to bed with seven minutes of regulation time remaining. George Chigova pushed Pule Mmodi’s initial effort straight at the Zimbabwean forward but he failed to hit the target with his lob effort.

In the end it mattered little as Arrows held on for a famous win on their travels.
