Mbule earns SuperSport a point as Swallows draw again

SuperSport United came from behind to hold Swallows FC to a 1-1 draw in a 2020-21 DStv Premiership match at Dobsonville Stadium on Tuesday.

Sipho Mbule scored a late equaliser for the visitors following Fawaaz Basadien’s opener. A 15th draw of the season leaves the Dube Birds fifth in the league standings while a point is enough to move Matsatsantsa back up to sixth spot.

It was a game of two halves with the first a dull affair with little to write home about.

That changed on the cusp of half-time when Swallows hit the back of the net with their first shot on target. Lebohang Mokoena picked out Basadien with a perfect cross at the back post and the winger powered home a diving header past George Chigova from closer range, to give the hosts a narrow lead at the interval.

SuperSport started the second half on the front foot and conjured a chance through the impressive Mbule in the 55th minute. The midfielder created a pocket of space for himself on the edge of the area before firing at goal but Virgil Vries was up to the task.

Thatayaone Ditlhokwe then watched his attempt from a corner kick headed onto the crossbar by Junaid Sait which allowed Vries to collect just after the hour mark.

The pressure finally paid off for Matsatsantsa in the 78th minute. Keenan Phillips beat his marker on the right flank before whipping in a pin-point cross which found Mbule who had timed his run to perfection to meet the ball at pace, leaving Vries with little chance.

Both teams had a chance to win the match in the final 10 minutes of regulation time.

First, Daniel Gozar squandered a gilt-edged opportunity after being brilliantly set up by Vuyo Mere before Bradley Grobler blazed over from close range at the other end of the park, after the ball fell at his feet in the box.

In the end, both teams had to settle for a point apiece which does neither one of the two’s hopes of a top-four finish any good.
