McCarthy expresses the desire to coach Zamalek

South Africa and Porto legend, Benni McCarthy, said that he hopes to one day coach in Egypt and would sign for Zamalek if it were possible.

McCarthy is indisputably one of the top talents to come out of South Africa, winning numerous titles in his home country as well as in Europe.

His most memorable time was with Jose Mourinho at Porto where he played a big role in helping them lift the UEFA Champions League trophy as well as five other domestic trophies.

Despite his young managerial career, which started in 2017 with Cape Town City, McCarthy has already made quite an achievement with AmaZulu FC in his first year in charge.

The 43-year-old took the Usuthu who sat in 13th place at the end of the 2019-2020 season and guided them to a second place finish at the end of the current season, 13 points behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns. This means that the team will compete in the CAF Champions League next season.

Speaking to Zamalek legend Ahmed Hossan Mido on his TV show “The changing room” on Al-Nahar, McCarthy said that his ambition is to coach in Egypt, mainly at Zamalek in order to compete with Pitso Mosimane.

“If I ever get the chance of coaching in Egypt, especially a big team like Zamalek that have fantastic players and I think they are as equally good as Al Ahly. So if you coach Zamalek you should be able to contest with Al Ahly,” said the former Ajax striker

“Hopefully, Mido has the power to make me the coach of Zamalek one day because I would love to have that kind of duels, to coach a very strong team against Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly,” he added.

Mosimane has proved once again to be one of the best coaches in Africa and the suitable choice for Al Ahly after guiding them to their second consecutive CAF Champions League final.
