TS Galaxy and Kaizer Chiefs played to a 0-0 draw in the final match of the opening weekend of the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday.

Neither team could conjure any real chances at goal throughout the course of the match and both Owen da Gama and Stuart Baxter will be hoping for an improved performance against Stellenbosch FC and Baroka FC respectively in midweek.

Both teams were limited to shots from range in the early exchanges with the first attempt on target coming in the 24th minute of the match. A long throw-in from Njabulo Blom caused Galaxy all sorts of problems and Samir Nurkovic pounced with the forward able to direct a powerful header on goal, but Bosnian goalkeeper Vasilije Kolak was up to the task on debut.

Chiefs had another chance via the head of Daniel Cardoso on the cusp of half-time following a bit of creativity from a set-piece situation but the centre-back failed to hit the target with his effort.

Galaxy aimed to punish the Amakhosi on the counter-attack with the introduction of Shaune Mogaila and Mohammed Anas after the break and the latter aimed a rasping shot at Bruce Bvuma’s goal in the 77th minute, but the Chiefs goalkeeper took all the sting out of the shot before gathering on the rebound.

Stuart Baxter had introduced Keagan Dolly for Samir Nurkovic nine minutes into the second-half and with him a change in approach. He looked lively down the right flank especially when Nkosingiphile Ngcobo rose off the bench, but the Glamour Boys still failed to really test the Rockets and as a result the match ultimately ended in a goalless stalemate.
