Swallows rescue point against Maritzburg

Swallows FC fought back to hold Maritzburg United to a 1-1 draw in the DStv Premiership match at the Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Therefore, Amaswaiswai and the Team of Choice remained 16th and 11th respectively on the league standings as Wandisile Letlabika cancelled out Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s opening goal in Soweto.https://ce055626c434b03026c3353c571a5b68.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html

Having been handed a rare start by new Swallows coach Dylan Kerr, Austin Muwowo was keen to impress and he unleashed a shot that was well-saved by goalkeeper Marcel Engelhardt 10 minutes into the game.

Mwape Musonda was playing with some determination under his former coach at Leopards, Kerr, but the Maritzburg defence which was marshalled by Alfred Ndengane did well to contain the 2018-19 PSL Golden Boot winner.

The Team of Choice grew in confidence after the half-hour and they began pressing Amaswaiswai as they looked to break the deadlock. They were awarded a corner-kick just before halftime.

The resultant cross from the corner was headed home by Bongokuhle Hlongwane to hand Maritzburg a 1-0 lead, with Rowan Human providing the assist and the visitors leading at the interval.

Amaswaiswai were eager to level matters after the restart and Tebogo Langerman forced Engelhardt into a save from a free-kick 10 minutes after the restart as the home side looked to level matters.

Speedy attackers Keletso Makgalwa, Dillon Solomons and Thabo Mosadi were both introduced by Kerr as Swallows pushed for the equalising goal, but the Team of Choice’s defence was looking solid and compact.

Engelhardt, who was determined to keep a clean sheet, was called into action with 15 minutes left on the clock and he pulled off a great save to deny Makgalwa from close range after the Maritzburg defence was exposed.

However, the German shot-stopper was finally beaten with two minutes left and it was Wandisile Letlabika who hit the back of the net to ensure that the game ended in a 1-1 stalemate on the day.
