MARITZBURG HOLD WASTEFUL AMAZULU

AmaZulu FC and Maritzburg United drew 0-0 in a DStv Premiership match at the Jonsson Kings Park Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The draw left Usuthu placed 10th on the league standings following the KwaZulu-Natal Derby clash, while the Team of Choice climbed up to 12th place.

The Team of Choice got off to a bright start with Thabiso Kutumela looking lively for the visitors and he had a chance to grab an early goal.

Clayton Daniels set-up Kutumela, who controlled the ball well and he unleashed a shot which was well-saved by AmaZulu goalkeeper Veli Mothwa.

The visitors were able to create chances and they should have broken the deadlock seven minutes before the half-hour mark.

Judas Moseamedi was sent through on goal, but somehow the former South Africa under-23 international placed his effort wide of the target.

Usuthu were struggling to contain the visitors, who were wasteful in front goal with Moseamedi being the chief culprit.

The ball fell kindly for Moseamedi in the 40th minute and he was denied by Mothwa, who ensured that the first-half ended with the two teams locked at 0-0.

Defenders Daniel Morgan and Rushine De Reuck were introduced by Maritzburg coach Ernst Middendorp prior to the start of the second-half.

However, it was Usuthu, who started the second-half well and they had an opportunity to open the scoring through Lehlohonolo Majoro.

The former Kaizer Chiefs centre forward forced Maritzburg keeper Jethren Barr into a brilliant save a few minutes after the restart.

Attack-minded duo of Siphesihle Maduna and Bonginkosi Ntuli were then introduced by AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy five minutes after the hour-mark.

Usuthu pushed for a late winning goal, but Barr was in top form in the latter stages of the game as he pulled off two great saves to deny Tapelo Xoki and Augustine Mulenga.

Maritzburg then stood firm at the back and ultimately, the match ended in a 0-0 draw with the two teams sharing the spoils on the day.
