Maritzburg out to deny Galaxy first win

Maritzburg United will be keen to snap their winless run in the DStv Premiership when they face TS Galaxy at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 3:30 pm CAT.

The Team of Choice extended their winless run to three matches in the league when they drew 0-0 with Orlando Pirates at home on Wednesday evening.

Therefore, the KwaZulu-Natal side is still placed 11th on the DStv Premiership standings – three points behind sixth-placed Pirates, who be in the CAF Confederation Cup action this weekend.

Ernst Middendorp, the Maritzburg head coach, was happy to see his side collect a point from their clash with Pirates and he has now turned his attention to their clash with Galaxy.

“You have to make sure you have a point and in particular this combo of Pirates, [Kaizer] Chiefs, [and Mamelodi] Sundowns. If you get a point in these type of games, it’s fantastic,” Middendorp said.

“We had a few chances on the break [against Pirates]. We kept it tight at the back and always knew with the forwards we have, we could pick up a possibility. Now it’s all about looking forward.”

Meanwhile, Galaxy remain winless in the league this season having registered their fourth consecutive defeat when they lost 1-0 to AmaZulu FC at home on Tuesday.

As a result, the Rockets are still placed 16th on the DStv Premiership standings – three points behind 14th-placed Chippa United and they will climb out of the relegation zone if they defeat Maritzburg.

Sead Ramovic, the Galaxy head coach, is looking forward to facing Middendorp having praised the former Kaizer Chiefs mentor as a great coach.

“It will not be easy at Maritzburg, playing against a German coach [Middendorp] but we have to believe in our quality and have confidence and I’m sure we will improve,” Ramovic said.

“Middendorp is known as a great coach and it won’t be easy but again, it won’t be easy for them to play against us. This is our main goal. We have to focus on our game and do better. I hope that we will start collecting some points soon.”

Maritzburg United: PLAYERS TO WATCH

Marcel Engelhardt: The German goalkeeper is the reason why Maritzburg did not lose to Pirates as he made several great saves to keep the Buccaneers at bay. Engelhardt will be eager to continue his good form and ensure that his side avoids a defeat by keeping another clean sheet.

Bongokuhle Hlongwane: The Bafana Bafana international is one of the top young South African strikers at the moment, but he has scored just once this season. Hlongwane will be looking to change this against Galaxy and inspire his side to a victory at home Pietermaritzburg.

Macbeth Mahlangu: The 2020/21 DStv Premiership Young Player of the Season nominee is expected to replace the suspended Pogiso Sanoka in the starting line-up this weekend. Mahlangu, who is blessed with good man-marking skills, will be determined to impress against Maritzburg.

Lindokuhle Mbatha: The experienced winger remains one of the most influential Galaxy players despite being 36-year-old as he still has the speed and dribbling skills to cut open any defence. Mbatha will be looking to play an important role in helping Galaxy win in KwaZulu-Natal.
