Baroka FC and Cape Town City played out a goalless stalemate in their DStv Premiership clash at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The result sees Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele bring up a 10th straight game without a win and remain bottom of the log, while the Citizens have drawn three of their last four and stay in 10th place on the standings.

City enjoyed more of the ball through the first half, though Baroka were the first to start threatening in attack, with Richard Mbulu glancing a header wide from an 18th minute corner kick for the first notable chance of the match.

City’s first effort on goal arrived on 25 minutes when Fagrie Lakay lined up a long range shot, but his effort was turned away by Baroka goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke.

The teams then effectively cancelled each other out for the remainder of the first stanza. The Cape side again had more possession, but struggled to pass the ball with the pace and accuracy needed to break down Baroka’s defence, while the hosts had a couple of hopeful moments on the break, but ultimately failed to test goalkeeper Hugo Marques.

Goalless at the break, early in the second half Baroka were gifted a fortunate penalty for what looked an accidental hand-ball from City centre-back Idumba Fasika. Mbulu took on the responsibility of the spot kick, but saw his casual effort saved by Marques in the 50th minute.

The City goalkeeper came to his team’s rescue again on 64 minutes, coming quickly off his line to smother the ball ahead of Dan Ndhlovu, who stole the ball from Taariq Fielies and threatened to break the deadlock.

Both teams had half-chances in the dying minutes, though ultimately neither had the hunger and quality to seize the moment and claim all three points on offer.

The final attempt – a shot direct from a free kick by Sekela Sithole in injury time which was nowhere the target – neatly summed up the game as a whole.

The teams will return to DStv Premiership action on Tuesday 14 December, with Baroka away to Mamelodi Sundowns and City visiting Marumo Gallants.
