Sekhukhune United grabbed maximum points following a narrow 1-0 win over Cape Town City
Sekhukhune United will depart the Mother City with maximum points in the bag this week, following a narrow 1-0 win over Cape Town City in the DStv Premiership on Wednesday night.
Despite a largely dominant display by the home team from a ball possession point of view, a 6th minute header by Chibuike Ohizu was enough for Sekhukhune to bag all three points on the road.
As the referee commenced proceedings in Athlone, Sekhukhune started brightly and took the game to City by taking the direct approach. Babina Noko were then awarded an early corner, which they took full advantage of.
Following the corner scenario, Sekhukhune took the lead in the 6th minute of the match as Chibuike Ohizu drew first blood for his side. With Elias Mokwana assuming corner duty, Ohizu popped up at the right place to head home from point blank range.
After conceding the goal, City began applying pressure high up the field as Darwin Gonzalez began pulling the strings for his side. However, the visiting team sat tight and did well to ward off City’s attacking advancements.
City continued to be proactive on the ball as the game commenced and created a couple of goal scoring chances toward the half-hour mark. The hosts were at the end of numerous fouls inside the opposition half but failed to make the most of their set-play opportunities.
Despite ending the half on a positive note, City headed into the break trailing as a result of Ohizu’s early effort.
As the second-half was introduced, City held most of the ball and looked tidy in possession while going forward. However, Babina Noko remained stubborn in defensive settings, especially in a low block.
While soaking up pressure, Sekhukhune looked to hit the Citizens on the break but failed to make the most of their chances while on the attack.
As the hour mark approached, City led the goal attempts tally, while bossing the ball possession count. It appeared that Sekhukhune kicked into game-management mode with around 20 minutes left on the clock.
With 75 minutes played, a sense of panic crept in for the home side and they ventured forward with energy and vigor. However, following a couple of defensive substitutions, Sekhukhune set up shop in an attempt to see out the encounter.
While the clocked wound down, Sekhukhune looked to exploit City on the counter while they committed in numbers going forward. However, Babina Noko failed to make the right decisions in the final third.
Nevertheless, Sekhukhune managed to hold on and recorded a crucial 1-0 victory on away soil.
