Amakhosi leave it late against Polokwane City

Kaizer Chiefs made it two wins on the spin in the Betway Premiership this week following a tense 1-0 win against Polokwane City at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.

While Polokwane City proved to be a tough nut to crack throughout the match, Chiefs managed to find the back of the net with around 10 minutes left on the clock through a well-taken goal by Siphesihle Ndlovu.

Amakhosi bossed proceedings early on and held most of the ball during the first 10 minutes of the game.

However, it was Polokwane City who came closest to scoring during this period as seen with attempts by Mokibelo Ramabu and Ndamulelo Mphangule.

Kaizer Chiefs cranked up the pressure midway through the first half with Gaston Sirino taking the initiative through a couple of goal-scoring opportunities.

With Chiefs unable to make the most of their chances, Rise and Shine remained dangerous on attack, especially at set-piece situations.

The Soweto giants came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock moments before the break after Makabi Lilepo struck the bar with a headed effort following a corner swung in by Sirino.

With neither side able to capitalise on their efforts, the game ended 0-0 at the halftime whistle.

hiefs looked bright after the restart but struggled to break down the stubborn Polokwane City backline.

Both Thabiso Monyane and Lilepo attempted to get their names on the scoresheet with shots from range but ultimately had their efforts blocked.

At the other end of the pitch, Puleng Marema was the attacker-in-chief for Rise and Shine in the second half and created a couple of scoring chances after the 70th minute mark.

After chipping away at the Polokwane City backline, Chiefs eventually opened the scoring through Ndlovu in the 78th minute.

After a quick passing move just outside the area, Ndlovu was on hand to collect Reeve Frosler’s cut back to guide the ball home with a right footed effort on the edge of the six-yard box.
